A tale of two paths. [WCCS]

Narrative: The first path for a chiropractic student is to become qualified and build the foundation for all that will be done in practice. There is a secondary path, one where the students find their passion. If this first path is everything you need to be qualified, the second path would be considered anything that you do while you’re in school that helps you to become competent.

This secondary path is the path that will help the student to one day stand in front of people with unconscious competence because they preemptively spent the time and energy to develop themself into the doctor they dreamt of becoming.

Taking time to care for one’s well-being while walking these paths is not optional, it is mandatory.

Walking into the world of ethics as a chiropractic student [WCCS]

Narrative: At the heart of Chiropractic Ethics lies fundamental values such as respect, kindness, humanity, and the commitment to doing good in the world.

We are instilled with a commitment to do no harm and to prioritise the well-being of our patients. This involves not only mastering chiropractic techniques but also developing critical thinking skills to assess the potential risks and benefits of various interventions.

By staying abreast of ethical developments and engaging in reflective practice, chiropractors can elevate the ethical standards of their private practices and help influence others around them.

The importance of Evidence-Based Practice and clinical competence in Chiropractic care

Narrative: We live in an Age where Medical misconceptions, misinterpretations of research findings, and the dissemination of unverified claims have the potential to undermine evidence-based practice and compromise patient care.

By ardently embracing evidence-based practice, nurturing clinical competence, nurturing critical thinking, and fostering collaboration, we can safeguard the sanctity of patient care and fortify the edifice of modern medicine against the perils of misinformation

Turn up, be present, and give: Leadership in the making

Narrative abstract: The World Congress of Chiropractic Students is the global representative body of chiropractic students and recent graduates. Participation is through a local chapter based in a chiropractic educational institution.

All students in all colleges are invited to join this dynamic and growing body which presently has 20 chapters around the world.

The three key elements for successful participation are the same as those for establishing a successful practice: turn up, be present, and give.

Philosophy: To be, or not to be?

Abstract: All students of chiropractic learn a philosophy. Practitioners try to help students by placing an importance on this or that form of chiropractic philosophy.

The WCCS welcomes all philosophies in the belief that by understanding each other and working together, we can achieve more for the growth of chiropractic than by taking dogmatic opposing positions.

We value this fellowship based around our common education and learning.

Abstract: If you really want to discover the kind of chiropractor you want to be, I believe it’s important to expose yourself to as many experiences as possible, get involved with organisations or groups like the WCCS, reach out to the people that drive you and motivate you and importantly ask as many questions as you can.

Diversity Beliefs as a bridge for the future: The future is good

Abstract: Chiropractic practitioners have the potential to help create space and acceptance for their patients, but what about each other? Chiropractic has a large spectrum when it comes to defining what is chiropractic. One side has a vitalistic view while the other is mechanistic, plus everything in between. The vitalistic chiropractors use the term vertebral subluxation and depending on how deep you want to take it, some have a more spiritual viewpoint. While the mechanistic viewpoint mainly focuses on the physical body and uses the term manipulation or moving a segment in space.

What if diversity is a key for improving the future of humanity, even chiropractic?

The WCCS: A phoenix arising from the ashes

The WCCS has the remarkable ability to make its members feel as though they are part of something that is bigger than themselves. We are the only international student-led chiropractic organization, paving the way for a future of higher standards of chiropractic care, globally.

We have started to plan face-to-face events again and are encouraging our members and chiropractic students from around the world to be represented by an organization that previously brought so many people together for so many years. There is still a small flame that burns within this organization, and that little flame is the members that have enough faith and patience to nurture it and watch it spread to more regions and to more members over time.

Preparing for the worst, hoping for the best and bracing for impact

'Much as a student must transition their practice to accommodate the most common conditions whilst not forgetting their essential education with regards to red flags; I hope that our organisation can progress towards being able to focus on a return to normal business, whilst not forgetting the lessons learned through the pandemic. This results in a ‘new normal’, one where we’ve learned the value of technology not only for its convenience, but for its accessibility - especially considering the global nature of WCCS. Furthermore, member engagement during these times has been challenging and through this experience the board has increased its awareness of what is most important to members and how this can most easily be provided. As always, the safety and satisfaction of our members remains a top priority.'

The image problem of chiropractic - a student’s perspective

Abstract:

The challenge to unite our profession while respecting and appreciating the diversity with in it is one that no person, country or organisation can solve alone.

That is why we encourage our student members to interact with and learn from each other early on.

I believe that if we focus on the core values that most chiropractors have in common: evidence-based, patient-centred care, we can grow into a united profession and then be more effective in our efforts to educate the public about our work and provide more people with chiropractic care.

Youth leadership and representation in Healthcare: The importance of youth having a voice in the Healthcare sector.

'We have found ourselves in a continuously developing and changing profession. However, this same profession is not fully understood or considered as a healthcare choice by the entirety of the global population. A lack of awareness and understanding of who Chiropractors are and what Chiropractic entails can be highlighted amongst others as one of the greatest modern-day challenges that the Chiropractic profession faces. The inclusion of the youth of Chiropractic in advocacy and interaction at high level proceedings gives the profession the opportunity to address matters of importance in a new and innovative manner.

To the Youth I say, take the opportunities given and do not be afraid of what the task encompasses. Be fearless in your pursuit to learn and you will always find someone to guide you along your path. Achieving this goal will be an incredible representation of the Chiropractic profession and the youth of healthcare at large'
